Human super-recognizers teach AI how to recognize faces in new study

You might know someone who struggles to recognize people, even if they’re famous and on TV all the time. On the other hand, there are some who seem to always know a face, remembering them from a brief meeting at a party years ago.

Now, new research from UNSW Sydney reveals that the secret to elite face recognition lies in not only taking in someone’s whole face but in what we choose to look at. In a study, researchers uncovered why “super-recognizers” — individuals with exceptional face recognition abilities — outperform the average person.

Pros and Cons of Wall Mounted vs. Door Mounted Exit Alarms

Sponsored by Detex

When it comes to securing your facility, exit alarms play an important role in alerting staff when a restricted or emergency door is opened. These devices are commonly used in retail, healthcare, education, and other industries where security and safety are critical.

But when choosing an exit alarm, one common decision you’ll face is how to mount it: directly on the door or on the wall beside it. Each option has advantages and drawbacks, and the right choice depends on your application, environment, and priorities.

Which Mounting Option Is Right for You?

Holograms, drones, and robots: presenting last week’s biggest technology plays at a glance

Retailers are leaning heavily into traceability, automation, and omnichannel fulfillment to increase transparency, improve delivery speed, and enhance customer engagement. Across markets, companies are modernizing logistics systems, expanding digital storefronts, and experimenting with immersive retail formats.

Walmart Reinvents The Shopping Cart

Every retailer is in search of the next great innovation to their business models, but they always say that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel to come up with something worthwhile.

Well, Walmart is testing out whether it can reinvent a critical part of the shopping experience that involves four wheels instead.

Reuters is reporting that Walmart has rolled out a new fleet of shopping carts meant to make produce department employees’ job more streamlined than before. Dubbed “quality carts,” the carriages come with built-in scales for measuring produce and containers for spoiled or expired items.

Target mandates employees smile and make small talk in bid to lift holiday sales

Target wants its employees to spread some holiday cheer — whether they like it or not, according to a report.

The Minneapolis-based retailer issued a new directive mandating in-store workers smile and make eye contact and either greet or wave to any shopper that comes within 10 feet, according to Bloomberg News.

If a customer steps within four feet, then the service rep is instructed to ask whether they need help or how their day is going, the new guidance said.

Major retailers like Walmart and Disney have long used similar customer-greeting rules that require employees to smile, make eye contact and offer assistance when guests come within a set distance.

Where to Stretch Your Cybersecurity Budget

Chetrice Romero has spent countless hours working in public service. Romero served as the first Cybersecurity Program Director for the state of Indiana. In this role, she worked hard to build a cybersecurity strategy to protect the entire state.

“It's really important to go back to just the cybersecurity basics. Are you using multi-factor authentication? Are you training your staff and employees at all levels to not click that link? Are you patching your systems? Do you have good monitoring software and applications that are monitoring your network even when you're sleeping?” Romero says.

Security Demands Spur Virtual Debit Card Adoption

More consumers than ever are turning to online shopping channels to meet their needs during the pandemic, but many are also aware that cybercriminals are looking to capitalize on this stepped-up online activity to steal their card data.

These kinds of concerns could encourage shoppers to change up how they make payments. Some are turning to virtual cards to keep their debit account numbers safe, providing shoppers with newly generated codes that can be restricted to work only when paying specific merchants or used just once before expiring.
