Federal and state authorities raid jewelry stores in multi-state $50 million gold bar scam

Federal and state authorities executed coordinated raids on multiple jewelry stores tied to an alleged $50 million gold bar scam spanning several states. Investigators say victims were manipulated into purchasing gold bars, which were then funneled through storefronts as part of a broader fraud operation. Law enforcement seized assets and documents as part of an ongoing investigation into what officials describe as an organized and sophisticated scheme. The case highlights how traditional retail fronts can be used to legitimize large-scale financial scams.

39 time theft: Man allegedly steals sports cards from Target, Walmart earns $39K in sales

A Florida man is accused of stealing high-demand sports trading cards during at least 39 separate visits to Target and Walmart locations. Authorities allege he resold the merchandise online, generating roughly $39,000 through eBay and other platforms. Investigators documented dozens of incidents before making the arrest, underscoring how repeat offenders can exploit self-service environments. The case reflects the continued vulnerability of collectible and high-resale items within big-box retail.

A LEGO store in Redlands became the latest target in a string of smash-and-grab burglaries hitting toy retailers across the region. Suspects reportedly forced entry and quickly removed high-value merchandise before fleeing the scene. Shameless female shoplifter steals nearly $100K in jewelry from NYC store: cops

Retail shrinkage, or the loss of inventory due to various factors, continues to be a major concern for retailers worldwide. In the U.S. alone, shrink in 2021 reached a staggering $94.5 billion, up from $90.8 billion in 2020, according to the National Retail Federation. The pandemic has further exacerbated the issue, with an increase in violence, shoplifting, organized retail crime, and employee theft reported by retailers.

To mitigate the impact of shrinkage on their bottom line, retailers can invest in an effective Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) system. In this blog post, we explore the benefits of EAS and why it's essential to have a properly installed and monitored system.

One of the primary benefits of an EAS system is that it has an expected lifespan of about 10-15 years and reliably protects a store 24/7 with few, if any, false alarms. When implemented, retailers can expect to see a loss reduction of up to 60% to 80%, depending on the type of retail environment. EAS systems have a significant deterrent effect, making stores less of a target for shoplifters and taking pressure off staff, allowing them to focus on their primary roles.

Sales of test items in control stores without EAS underperformed those in EAS locations, and item "sell-through" improves when EAS is in use. This means that fewer items go missing, and retailers can increase their sales and profits.

VIDEO: Walmart’s past shoplifting policy stressed restraint, safety over confrontation

The shooting of two suspected shoplifters by law enforcement at Walmart stores in Orange and Osceola counties this week is raising new questions about how the retail giant handles theft.

Walmart’s internal rules for dealing with suspected shoplifters once placed strict limits on how far its own employees could go — and repeatedly emphasized backing off and calling police when situations turned dangerous.

Retail jobs at risk from rising employment costs

The latest survey of retail CFOs and finance directors reveals a sharp rise in anxiety about labor costs over the next year. These concerns have shot up the agenda since the start of implementation of the Employment Rights Act, which became law in January.

69% describe themselves as ‘pessimistic’ or ‘very pessimistic’ (up from 56% in July 25), and only 14% ‘optimistic’ (11% in July 2025).

This downbeat retail outlook reflects unease about the budget, which 74% of CFOs suggested would make it ‘harder to invest’.

Labor market pressures dominate CFOs’ worries for the year ahead: 84% ranked labor and employment costs in their top three concerns.
