Retail theft rates surge in these U.S. states. Is your state on the list?

Retail theft is surging across several U.S. states, with new FBI-derived data showing some regions are facing incident rates far above the national average. According to the analysis, New Mexico tops the list at 1,277 thefts per 10,000 businesses—nearly double the national baseline. Southern states and smaller markets also rank alarmingly high, with Tennessee and Maryland posting over 900 incidents per 10,000 businesses each. While some traditionally “safe” states report lower theft rates, the trend signals that organized and systemic retail crime is rapidly becoming a nationwide challenge.
