Target says its inventory losses, known in retail as “shrink,” have fallen back to levels seen before the pandemic. While theft has dominated headlines in recent years, analysts say improved supply chain stability and inventory management have also helped reduce shrink across the industry. Shrink includes losses from shoplifting, damaged goods, administrative errors, and shipping discrepancies. Experts caution that factors like tariffs and pricing fluctuations could still push shrink higher again in the future.

From Long-Term Promise to Near-Term Value
“We’ll see ROI in 18–24 months.” If you’ve heard that promise before, you already know the problem. By the time that return finally arrives, your business has changed, theft patterns have evolved, and you’re already planning the next investment cycle.
What if the return showed up in four weeks instead? Modern retail AI is being engineered differently, designed for efficiency rather than built on hardware-heavy legacy infrastructure. That means faster deployment, lower upfront costs, and results that begin showing up almost immediately. Instead of waiting years to justify the investment, retailers can start seeing measurable value in weeks. Even better, a single intelligent platform can address multiple challenges at once, from loss prevention and safety to operational insights and customer experience improvements.
When the architecture is designed intelligently, the economics change dramatically. The result is enterprise-grade AI that performs without the enterprise-sized budget.
