AI-Generated Damage Claims Trigger Retail Crackdown on Return Fraud
Retailers are facing a new and more sophisticated form of return fraud, one in which artificial intelligence is being used against them.
Shoppers are submitting AI-generated images of damaged or incorrect products to claim refunds on merchandise they received in good condition, and the practice is spreading fast enough to prompt a wide response from merchants and their logistics partners.
Unlike traditional return abuse, which often involved “wardrobing” or reusing receipts, the new tactic relies on fabricated visual proof. Consumers can generate convincing images of scratched electronics, cracked screens or torn fabric using free image-generation tools.
Those images are then uploaded through standard return portals designed to streamline legitimate complaints.
Will AI Change the Face of Front-Line Retail Work?
Nested within a broader discussion of how the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools is driving employment and wage growth — at least, in industries which show exposure to AI in the first place — Forbes contributor Richard Kestenbaum discussed how recent data provided by Teneo might directly impact the nature of front-line retail work.
“If productivity is really increasing, then work will change and so will expectations of workers. People will be expected to do more faster and make better decisions and that usually requires new skills. That’s the exciting part: workers can become dramatically more capable.
It’s also the scary part: the baseline skill level for many jobs may rise and workers who can’t get access to training will fall behind,” Kestenbaum began.
Home Depot vs. Lowe's: Both Retail Giants Are Tapping AI, but Which One Is Doing It Better?
As most investors know, Home Depot and Lowe's Companies are the country's two largest home improvement retailers.
They have succeeded for decades by providing for such needs, and it should not come as a surprise that both companies have pivoted extensively into artificial intelligence (AI).
What may intrigue investors is that each company is not necessarily taking the same approach with AI, and that could affect profitability and, ultimately, stock returns over time. Hence, investors should evaluate each strategy to find which company has capitalized on AI in retail better.
Most customers generally regard Home Depot as the store more geared toward contractors. To that end, the company is working to make AI an integral part of its customers' home improvement projects.
Unlock Your Data with CONTROLSPAN
Retailers can’t manage what they can’t see. CONTROLTEK’s CONTROLSPAN platform brings deeper visibility into store operations with real-time insights that help teams make smarter decisions. By analyzing traffic patterns, alarms, and daily activity, the system gives operators a clearer picture of what’s happening throughout the store. That intelligence can help reduce loss, optimize staffing levels, and turn everyday data into meaningful action.
The result is a smarter, more responsive approach to store operations powered by real-time visibility.

The world is still reeling from the USA and Israel's attacks on Iran, with the codenamed Operation Roaring Lion (by Israel) and Operation Epic Fury (by the USA) taking out key government officials that include the second supreme leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei.
Things have rumbled on since 2025's 12-day war, with the USA again warning that Iran needed to surrender its nuclear program or face consequences. President Donald Trump has sparked fears that we're closer than ever to World War III, especially after Iran retaliated with drone and ballistic missile strikes in the Persian Gulf.
Troubled Waters: How The Strait Of Hormuz Crisis Could Reshape European Grocery Retail
While the physical theatre of the conflict between Iran, the US and Israel remains contained to the Middle East, the economic shockwaves are already radiating toward European shores.
With the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime artery handling around 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG), effectively paralyzed, European grocery retailers and FMCG manufacturers could face prolonged and severe operating challenges.
This conflict is not a distant geopolitical event, as it could have direct implications for the Continent’s supply chains, energy costs, and consumer affordability.
How do Britons feel about shoplifting?
For many retailers, shoplifting has become an everyday occurrence, with the number of offences recorded hitting new heights last year. Although the government has pledged to take a tougher line on such thefts, shopkeepers have regularly complained about feeling like no action is being taken.
And it’s not just shopkeepers who are noticing the rising crime: a third of Britons (33%) say they have witnessed someone shoplifting at least once in the last 12 months.
While some claim that shoplifting has effectively been decriminalized, the results show that three quarters of Britons (74%) see shoplifting as an at least fairly serious crime, including one in six (18%) who believe it’s a very serious offence.

DOL OIG to audit OSHA’s workplace violence prevention efforts
OSHA’s efforts to address and prevent workplace violence will get a closer look from the Office of Inspector General.
According to OIG’s fiscal year 2026 workplan, the office’s planned audit on the subject will be the first for OSHA in 25 years.
The workplan states that of the 5,486 fatal workplace injuries recorded in 2022, 849 were cases of “intentional injury by another person.”
In DOL’s most recent regulatory agenda, OSHA’s potential standard on workplace violence in health care and social assistance was listed under “long-term actions,” meaning no progress on the rulemaking was expected for at least six months – and likely longer.
