Publix appears to reverse controversial open-carry store policy

Just months after Publix sparked controversy by implementing a policy allowing customers to openly carry firearms in its stores, the Lakeland-based grocery store chain appears to have reversed course.

New signs posted now state: “Publix kindly asks that only law enforcement openly carry firearms in our stores.”

The message appears near the bottom of a broader list of store rules, alongside more routine policies like no pets and no soliciting.

The decision drew criticism from some gun safety advocates because the ruling did not require private businesses to permit open carry.

Why Technology Adoption Fails in Retail and How Leaders Fix it

The top reason technology fails in retail has nothing to do with the technology.

Retailers are deploying increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence, robotics, and analytics platforms, yet nearly 90 percent of AI-powered technology transformations in grocery have not reached scale. These tools stall because the operating model fails to absorb them.

In effect, retailers are buying and installing Ferrari engines in compact sedans. The technology is powerful, but without thoughtful changes to workflows, incentives and habits, it cannot deliver its full potential.

From Incident to Accountability

Retail crime doesn’t end at the arrest—and neither should loss prevention efforts.

ALTO connects in-store incidents to legal outcomes, helping retailers reduce repeat offenses and improve overall safety.

By partnering with law enforcement, legal teams, and local specialists, the platform ensures cases are followed through to resolution.

This end-to-end approach strengthens accountability, supports store teams, and drives measurable reductions in recidivism across retail environments.
